Belsize Grove Flat Renovation / London
The flat is located at a late 1960's block of flats. The floor area of the flat is 80sqm with 2 bedrooms, a bathroom, and a separate kitchen. The aim of the project is to create versatile and enjoyable pockets of spaces within the flat, which reflects the feeling of comfort. The new design divides the living room into two parts by creating a library corner and a lounge area. For the library corner, SZD designed the maze library concept through a custom-made software. Modularity is the main characteristic of this concept. The modules are used as a divider of books through subjects, for instance a module on history and another one on photography. This aspect of design makes the library easier to organise and easier to use. The repetition of the modules in a complex order creates the maze like pattern. The custom software of the library allows everyone to create their own maze pattern by changing the configuration of these modules. This configuration is always linked to the individual’s collection of books. The owner of the library can reshuffle the maze to see different maze patterns through its custom-made software. In the lounge area, the aim was to maximize the storage area and to create a strong visual link between the inside and the garden. Therefore, SZD designed a bench along the window and a library to use the corner space. SZD kept the original door to the living room dated from 1960s. The kitchen in this flat is made to create a communicative environment between the person who is cooking and his/her audience. To accomplish this, SZD created an island in the middle of the narrow kitchen space and isolated the cooking area from the sitting area. The kitchen worktop and the sink are made of Quartz Statuario marble, selected due to its settle and elegant nature of veins. All the units in the kitchen are custom-made. The mirrors on the walls are to increase visual interaction in the space. To add a style to its communicative environment, there is a hanging bar unit designed for items that needs an easy access. Additionally, the kitchen worktop can be used as a working corner, equipped with plugs and lighting. The flat has a laundry and utility section separated from the bathroom through pocket doors.
